If you're not using second skin

  • Wash with warm water and a MILD unscented soap.
  • Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor, A&D ointment, or similar products 3 times per day for the next 3 days.
  • After 3 days use an UNSCENTED hand lotion, such as Lubriderm or Curel until the tattooed skin returns to normal.
  • Stay out of sunlight and tanning beds for at least 7-10 days, or until the tattoo is healed.
  • Wear  loose fitting clothes, as the tattoo can get irritated by rubbing.
  • Feel free to shower after your tattoo, however do not soak your tattoo in any manner, nor go swimming.
  • As hard as it is do not pick, scratch, or rub it. As loss of colour and/or INFECTION can occur.
  • Sun exposure and extreme amounts of sunlight will cause any tattooo to fade, so SPF25 or higher is recommended.
  • DO NOT let your pets lick you new tattoo or sleep in the same bed with them.

Bruising along with redness and slight swelling is normal. 

If any signs or symptoms of infection, such as green or yellow discharge, redness at the tattoos location, or fever appear.

If you're not using second skin

  • Remove the second skin originally applied at the shop after 24 hours From the original application.
  • wash well with warm water and MILD soap making sure to gently clean it. DO NOT SCRUB it.
  • Make sure the tattoo is free of soap residue and let it air dry. DO NOT towel dry it NOR touch it.
  • DO NOT apply any creams or ointments to the tattoo at this point. 
  • With CLEAN HANDS apply the new second skin provided to you by your artist and LEAVE it on for 5 days.

As with any tattoo healing process the skin can bruise and swell a bit. However if there are symptoms of infection, green or yellow discharge, redness at the tattoo location, or a fever appears.

Yes, the bumps that you're seeing on your skin are ingrown hairs and regular zits. As long at they are not bleeding and there is no green or yellow puss coming out of it you're okay.


Yes, as your tattoo heals the external skin will begin to peel, even with lotioning and the second skin. This is completely normal, as the layer of skin underneath is the healing layer.


If you believe your tattoo is infected, do not panic. Firstly you'll want to verify that it is actually infected, usually a good indicator of this is puss or continued bleeding days after the tattoo has been completed. If it is infected, it is recommended that you go to a physician IMMEDIATELY.
